About

At ArtRio 2022Millan will present a selection of artists whose practices explore different techniques in the artistic field and discuss the History of Art and Brazilian culture.

Among the selected artists are Emmanuel Nassar (1949, PA, Brazil) - who, in September, will hold a solo exhibition at the Museu de Arte do Rio. Using different supports, techniques, and appropriating objects from everyday contexts and popular culture, Nassar dialogues with the tradition of Brazilian art, broadening the possibilities of the pictorial field and engaging in discussions on the ideas of precariousness and development.

With a keen eye for stigmatized cultures and spaces, Miguel Rio Branco (Canary Islands, Spain) has developed an experimental practice in film and photography since the 1970s. In his work, the exploration of contrasts in luminosity and chromatic compositions stand out.

Also recognized for his continuous experimentation, Dudi Maia Rosa (1946, SP) has a well-known trajectory in painting and the two-dimensional support, especially in his works with pigmented polyester resin. For ArtRio, Millan presents a group of Maia Rosa’s watercolors, works that reveal affective aspects of the artist and stand out in relation to his most emblematic work.

The multi-artist and curator Jaider Esbell (1979, RR - 2021, SP) is another highlight of the show. Esbell’s legacy has been consolidated inside and outside Brazil, with exhibitions such as The milk of dreams, 59th Venice Biennial, Italy, and with the acquisition of his work by the George Pompidou Center, among other institutions. At ArtRio, Millan presents a selection of works by Esbell  in which the artist adopted materials such as pens, markers, and various inks.

With a unique technique, Nati Canto (1982, SP) - artist represented by Millan since July of the present year - combines gastronomic procedures with those of contemporary art. Canto uses gelatine and dead dough bread recipes, fruits and natural pigments to create pieces that are positioned between painting, sculpture and installation and reflect on the temporality of the work of art and the way in which the sensorial experience unfolds in our bodies.

Also part of the selection is Gustavo Caboco (1989, Curitiba, Roraima). Taking his biography and ancestry as a starting point, the artist interweaves into his artistic practice the struggle for indigenous rights and concepts of Wapichana knowledge, which take shape through paintings and drawings.

The line - of fabric and of drawing - is the point of contact between the works of Guga Szabzon (1987, SP) and Vivian Caccuri (1986, SP). Using felt as support, in Guga’s case, and mosquito net, as Caccuri does, the artists approach critically and humorously the distinctions and hierarchies between techniques, knowledges, and forms of cultural expression within the art system and in society as a whole.
